4th Grade Feb 25-Mar 1st

In math we are finishing up our fractions and decimals unit. We will be learning how to add and subtract decimals. Then we will start reviewing for our test. Students will be taking their fraction on Wednesday then a pretest for our next unit on Thursday. In writing we are finishing up our Author Reports. Students will be given Monday and Tuesday to work on what ever they need to work on to finish up their reports. On Wednesday students will practice giving their oral presentations. Thursday and Friday we will be giving our oral presentations. Students absolutely MUST have their reports done by Friday. If students complete their reports, including reading a book by their author, before Thursday, then students will be expected to write a story pretending to be their author, or write a letter to their author with the extra time they have in class. If students do not have their report completed by Thursday, they must take it home and finish it at home before it is due on Friday March 1st. I have been trying to give students as much time as possible in class to get their report done. If they have not used their time in class wisely, more than likely, they will need to finish their report at home to get it done in time. I have posted an example of the written report, poster, and oral presentation on my blog so you can see exactly what is expected of students and have an example to look at.

5th Grade Feb 25-Mar 1st

This week in math we are learning how to multiply fractions. We will be learning how to estimate products, multiply fractions and mixed numbers, and learning about division with fractions. In writing we have just taken our DWA. Yea!!!!! Now that we are done preparing for this writing test, we are done writing persuasive essays. We are now working on our State Reports. Students right now are working on their note cards full of notes about their states. Students have been given sheets telling them exactly what information they need and what they need to do for this assignment. I am giving them time everyday in class to work on their note cards. To do this though, students need to be sure that they bring either books about their state, or printed of information from a website about their state. They are going to need at least 3 different sources for their report; this means that students need 3 different books, websites, or a combination of both for their report.

4th Grade Author Report

We did a report together as a class. The students have all seen these because they helped me to create them. I thought that I would post our example on here so that you as parents can see what is expected of students for their poster.

Poster
The poster needs to have the author's name and picture, at least 1 picture of a place that has something to do with the author, and their flip book. Pictures need labels unless they are a picture of the author or one of their books. There should not be a lot of empty space on the poster, make it look nice! If you have too much space, find more pictures to add to it. Also, students are not to write directly on the poster. Students either need to write nicely or type on other paper, and then they can glue that paper onto their poster.

The flip book should have 8 tabs with labels like mine. The first tab is the author's name, and the last tab is the book by that author that students read. Students should use the information they found in their written report and list this information on each tab in their flip book. The last tab should be a 2 paragraph summary of the book they read.

Written Report
I also did a published copy of our written report. Students can either type this or hand write it in their nicest handwriting. Here is a copy our our written report so you know what student's written report should be like.

Andrew Clements
By: Miss Teaford’s Class
Our author is Andrew Clements. He was born on May 29, 1949 in Camden, New Jersey. When he was in the 6th grade he moved to Illinois. He is most famous for his best selling book Frindle. We picked him because we liked Frindle.
Andrew Clements went to Northwestern University. He got a masters at National Lewis University. He also taught creative writing. As you can see, he is very well educated. We think everyone should read his books.
Andrew Clements has won a lot of awards. Here are some of them. He has won the Utah Children’s’ Choice Award. He also won the Sasquatch Children’s Book Award. Another award that he won was the Judy Lopez Award. Andrew Clements has won many unique awards.
Andrew Clements loves to read. A book once changed his life. He also likes to play the guitar. He loves being creative. He also likes to build things. These are some of his many hobbies.
Andrew Clements spent most of his summers in Maine without TV or Internet, only with books. He has been a songwriter, teacher, and has worked for many publishing companies. Andrew Clements likes to build houses. He now lives in Massachusetts.
Andrew Clements has written many books. In 1996 he wrote a book called Frindle. While we were in the year 1999, he published The Landry News. During 2005, he published Lunch Money. Andrew wrote a book called No Talking in 2007.
We picked Andrew Clements because he is a well-known author. He won many different awards. He loves to read and create things. He is a very interesting person. He is an amazing author who will go down in history!

Oral Presentation
Students must have their report completed and must give an oral presentation on Thursday February 28th or Friday March 1st. This is part of their grade. It must be at least 1 minute in length. Students are expected to read their written report to the class, read their flip book, and tell the class about everything on their poster.

4th Grade Feb 19th-Mar 1st

In math we are going to begin learning about decimals. We will learn how decimals and fractions relate, learn place value with decimals, learn how to compare and order decimals, and learn how to round decimals. We will also be taking a quiz to see how students are doing with adding and subtracting fractions. It is important for students to remember that they must have the same sized pieces, or the same denominator, in order for them to add or subtract fractions. The hardest thing for students that I have been seeing is simplifying fractions. Students are forgetting to simplify their answers and are forgetting how to simplify. On homework, please remind your student to simplify their answers! In writing we are continuing to work on our Author Report. Students should have their rough draft completed by now. This week in class we will be focusing on the poster part of their assignment. I will be showing students in class exactly what is expected of them to do for their poster. Students will have time in class to work on their poster. Please send you student to school with their poster by Thursday at the latest. By the end of this week students should have their poster completed. Next week they will have time in class to finish what they haven’t gotten done on their report and to practice their presentations. On Thursday February 28th we will begin our oral presentations. Students must have their report completed and ready to present by Friday March 1st at the latest.
