Week 11

This week in reading we are reading Social Studies and Science texts and learning the meaning of words in them. Spelling this week is Sort 18 and is similar to last week's sort but this time with the long -i sound.

In writing we are starting our Poetry Unit. We are learning about similes and metaphors and writing 10 different kinds of poems. By next week we will have written all 10 different poems.

In math we are finishing up our fractions unit. On Friday students will be taking their test for this unit. It is a pretty easy unit and I hope that all students will pass this test. There are only 8 questions about identifying fractions, what a unit fraction is, adding and subtracting fractions, and mixed numbers vs fractions greater than 1.

The end of the 1st term we thought was ending this Friday, but it is actually ending on Friday November 15th. This means that everything for last week and this week WILL actually be on this terms grades. The next 2 weeks work will go on the 2nd term grades.

Week 10

This week in reading we are learning how to identify the meaning of words and phrases in a particular text. We are also learning about words that pertain to Greek Mythology such as Herculean. For spelling this week we are doing Sort 17. These words have the long -a sound in them and are separated into sorts by the syllable that the long -a sound is in. We also have another Language Arts test coming up this Friday.

In writing we are finishing our Haunted House story. The story should be about 5 paragraphs long. Students need an introduction, a conclusion, and a middle. They need to tell about the 3 "haunted things" they see in each room and need to have a vivid verb and a prepositional phrase showing the where, when, or how they saw something or did something in each room. Besides this, students also need to complete their checklist in class to make sure their story has everything in it that they need. This story is due this Friday, October 25th.

In math this week we are finishing up Unit 2. Students will be taking their test tomorrow, Tuesday. This will cover multiplication of 1 digit by 4 digit numbers, 2 digit by 2 digit numbers, and long division. Then we will be moving on to fractions. For the next 2 weeks we will be focusing on what fractions are, how to add unit fractions, identify them from pictures, etc . . .

If your student has been invited to Double Dosing this week, please remind your student to come! This especially goes for PM students who need to come to school at 8 am. Please make sure they come on time to Double Dosing so that they can get all of the extra support and help that they can.

Batter – uncooked mixture of food ingredients
Skeptical – showing or having doubt
Suspicious – suspecting or questioning

Week 9

This week in reading we are learning about identifying characteristics of the characters and the setting in a story or a play. We do this by looking at the text and seeing what it says about the characters and the setting. We look for clues in the text and figure out what the character likes, dislikes, feels, looks like, etc . . . We also look at the text and identify where the story/drama is taking place. For spelling this week we will continue working with Sort 16. Students will take their test for this sort on Friday. Students will also take their 3rd Language Arts test. It will cover the things we have been going over last week and this week including the vocabulary for weeks 8 and 9.

In writing we are continuing to work on our Haunted House story. Students this week should finish their picture/prewrite. Then they will be drafting their story. This story will be due next Friday, October 25th.

In math we are learning how to do long division. We will be modeling it and learning how to do the standard algorithm. We are also reviewing multiplication. Students are still having trouble multiplying 2 digits by 2 digits and 4 digits by 1 digit. PLEASE take the time to review multiplication with your students! We will be taking our test for this unit next Tuesday, October 22nd. It will include multiplication and division. Please also take the time to help your student review for this test. You can access your students pretest, Unit 2 Test 1 on http://www-k6.thinkcentral.com. It will have your student's answers to the pretest, as well as the correct answers to the problems. The test we will be taking next week will have VERY similar questions on it. If your student understands the questions on the pretest, they should be able to pass the post text next week.

Our school is starting up Double Dosing again next week. If you are not familiar with this program, this is a wonderful chance for your student to get some extra small group help on concepts they are struggling with in class before or after school. We as teachers pick the students we believe could benefit the most from this extra help and invite them to Double Dosing for 2 weeks. If your student brings home a yellow paper inviting them to double dosing, please make sure you sign it and have your student bring it back to me giving them permission to participate in this wonderful program.

Week 8

In reading this week we are working on figuring out the meaning of a multiple meaning word based off of context clues in the text. This means that we are looking at a word such as "bill" in a book about the government, and using clues in the book to figure out that bill in this book means a proposal for a law. For spelling we are doing Sort 16. Because of Fall Break, students will have this week and next week to do this spelling sort. That means that spelling homework is not due until NEXT Friday October 18th for Sort 16. That is also when students will be taking their spelling test for this sort.

In writing we are starting our Haunted House Unit. We are talking about things that you would see and what you would do inside a haunted house. We are drawing a picture of our haunted house as a class and then we will describe what we see and do as we walk through the haunted house. We are also taking about Prepositional Phrases and Vivid Verbs as we do this unit. Prepositional Phrases are phrases that show the location of a subject. For example: above, through, around, by, etc . . .  Vivid Verbs are action words that vividly describe what you are doing so well that you can easily picture them in your mind. For example: screamed, snuck, crawled, tiptoed, etc . . .

In math we are working on multiplying 2, 2digit numbers together. I have taught students several methods on how to do these problems. I do not care which method they choose to use to solve these problems, I just want them to be able to solve them. We have really been focusing on partial products. This is when you find the 4 multiplication problems you need to do in the 2 by 2 digit problem, and then you add up the answers. We are also starting to talk about division this week. By next week students should be able to divide a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number.
