4th Grade Sep 24-28

In math this week we are learning about multiplication. We will be doing activities with arrays all week long. In writing we are continuing our Explanatory unit. Students will be continuing to revise their “How To” paper today. Tomorrow we will be editing our papers, and on Thursday we will be publishing. Papers need to be rewritten in their best handwriting or typed. They should also include a picture that visually helps to explain how to do their “How To.” Their papers are due on Friday September 28th. That day we will be doing Author’s Chair and students will share their papers with the class. I will then make a book out of them for our class. Students should be able to finish their paper in class this week unless they want to take it home to type it.

5th Grade Sep 24-28

This week in Math we are working on multiplying decimals. This is a really hard concept to grasp for students. I really want students to understand that when we are multiplying decimals we are really finding groups of that decimal. For example, if the problem is 5 x 0.34 then we are finding 5 groups of 0.34. It always helps if we think of it in money form. We are finding 5 groups of $0.34. The rule students need to understand is that when we multiply decimals, we do it the same as whole numbers, but our answer should have as many decimal places as our problem. For example, if we have 3.4 x .98, there are 3 decimal places so our answer should have 3 decimal places as well, 3.332. If you could help your students understand this that would be wonderful! In writing, student’s Autobiographies were due yesterday, Monday September 24th. This week we will be doing Author’s Chair and students will be presenting their Autobiography to the class.

This week in Math we are working on different ways to solve multiplication problems. We will be learning how to multiply with decimals, finding patterns, and using different methods to find products. In writing we are finishing up our Autobiography unit this week. Students started drafting their Autobiography on Monday. On Wednesday we will work on revising our rough draft and on Thursday we will edit it. On Friday students will be given time to work on publishing their final draft. Students will either need to type their final draft at home or rewrite their final draft in their best handwriting in class that day. If you student brings it home to type it, please make sure that they type it using Times New Roman 12 pt. font. Please make sure your student prints 2 copies if they type it. Students should have a sheet titled “Autobiography Project” that tells them what they need to do and turn in for this project. I will provide students with a folder for their Autobiography so you don’t need to worry about getting one. I am trying to give students as much time as possible in class to do their project, but sometimes time just runs out. Please help your student to finish this project by Monday September 24th.
