Week 15

This week in Reading we will be learning a little about the history of Thanksgiving. We still have vocabulary words for this week, but we do not have spelling words. Students will also need to make sure they still do their reading log this week, including entering in their days read into Road to Success, but they will not have any spelling homework this week.

In writing we are still working on persuading people to believe our opinion. Last Friday, students were supposed to turn in their Turkey paper persuading the family not to eat them for Thanksgiving. This week we will be doing different activities to help students develop opinions on topics and learning how to persuade people to believe their opinion. At the end of the year students will be required to type into the computer a persuasive paper. This is a new end of the year test for 4th grade that is starting this year.

In math we are learning about equivalent fractions. We have talked about what they are already, so this week we are focusing on finding and making equivalent fractions.

In Social Studies we are beginning PowerPoint Presentations on our favorite recreational activities in Utah. Students will be given class time to create these presentations. We are also still studying our counties. Please be sure and help your student memorize their counties and county seats. They should have a pink study guide that they made in class last week.

Have a very enjoyable Thanksgiving Break! If you are traveling, travel safe and have fun!

Week 14

This week in reading we are discussing the differences between 1st and 2nd hand accounts. A 1st hand account was written by someone who was actually there and saw what was going on. A 2nd hand account is written by someone who was not there and is writing it about about someone else who was there. Fore spelling we are doing list 27. These words have -er, -ir, or -ur making the "er" sound. Our spelling test will still be on Friday. Next week we will not be having spelling.

In writing this week we have started our Opinion/Persuasive letters. We have been working on two different letters in class. First, students are writing me a letter telling me why I should give them $10 in Maui Money. That letter is due tomorrow. Next, students are writing a letter as if they were a turkey that has been captured for Thanksgiving Dinner, and they are trying to persuade the family that has caught them to not eat them. This letter is due on Friday.

In math we have taken our Place Value Test. Tomorrow we will be starting our next unit on Equivalent  Fractions. This will build off of our previous unit on fractions.

In Social Studies we are beginning our study of Utah's Counties and County Seats. Before Christmas Break, students will have a test on these. They must have them memorized; they have to find the county on the map and match the county with its county seat on the back. This week we are making study guides that are EXACTLY like the test will be so that students can start studying them. The closer it gets to the test, we will start having quizzes on the counties as well.

Lastly, don't forget about the school movie party on Friday. We will be watching Planes at Orem High. PM students should come to school at 9 AM so that we can leave to the busses at 9:15. If students are late, they will be left. If you do not want your student to attend please return the form sent home to let us know that your student will not be coming with us and needs to stay at school.

Week 13

In reading this week we are learning about narrators in stories. Stories are written either in 1st person or 3rd person. 1st person narration is when the narrator is actually in the story. Stories written in 1st person include the pronouns I, me, us, we, etc . . . which help us know that the narrator is a character in the story. 3rd person narration is when someone not in the story is telling the story. This is like when a narrator tells someone else's story. 3rd person includes the pronouns they, them, etc . . . For spelling we are doing Sort 21 this week. These words have the long and short -e sound in them either in the 1st or 2nd syllables of the word. Also, on Friday we will be having Language Arts Test 5

In writing this week we are finishing our Poetry Unit. We will be revising and editing our poems, then we will be rewriting our poems and typing some of them on our blog. They are due this Friday November 15th.

In math we are continuing to work on Place Value. Students are doing very will with this math unit. We will be taking our text for this unit next week. We will also be retaking our test for Unit 2 this week. If students do better on this test than they did on the original test, the new score will replace the old one on this Trimester's grades.

Lastly, the Trimester ends this week. I must have all missing assignments in by this Wednesday. Please be sure that your students turn in all of their missing assignments so they can be graded on all of the work they have done.
